Satellite Operations Engineer
Engineering - Toronto, Ontario

Kepler is changing the face of satellite communications by launching a constellation of telecommunication nanosatellites! With the recent success of our Series A funding, a handful of early customers, and our first satellite in orbit, Kepler is currently doubling in size!

We invest heavily to deliver the best products to our customers, and so we’re on the hunt for a top-tier Satellite Operations Engineer.

At Kepler, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a small dedicated team of engineers to build and operate a constellation of satellites. You will develop the satellite LEOP, commissioning and standard operating procedures and implement them in flight.

Day-to-day, you will interface with the engineering team to identify key technical risks and develop recovery methods. You’ll also have the opportunity to define, build and test ground systems to support constellation operations. Here is a little more detail on the things we expect you to do:

Position Responsibilities:

Spacecraft in Orbit:

  • Perform nominal operations to keep spacecraft healthy and delivering their services
  • Address anomalies to ensure rapid return to service
  • Trending and performance analysis of the spacecraft platform and payload
  • Continually improve operations and processes to be more efficient
  • On-call operations support to respond to alerts and investigate anomalous conditions

Spacecraft in Development:

  • Support launch and commissioning preparations
  • Test spacecraft functionality throughout development process
  • Create and validate operating procedures for all mission phases
  • Participate in spacecraft conceptual studies: PDR, CDR, and FDR
  • Provide input on design as influenced by intended future operations, especially where onboard autonomy and FDIR are concerned

Ground Segment:

  •  Participate in the definition, design, testing and deployment of ground segment software tools, with a particular focus on automation and scalability
  • Development of operating procedures for monitoring and maintenance of ground segment elements

Position Requirements:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline
  • At least 3-5 years of experience operating a 3- axis stabilized spacecraft with responsibility for one or more platform subsystems or instruments during operational validation, commissioning and/or routine operations phases
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in either spacecraft operations or ground testing, where focus was on platform system as a whole
  • Experience in specification of system operational concepts, constraints and facility requirements
  • Experience with spacecraft mission analysis and design

Bonus Points:

  • Experience in defining/implementing FDIR and automation
  • Experience in procedure change control and configuration management processes
  • Knowledge of RF communications and spacecraft command and control systems
  • Experience in the operation or development of satellite ground segment facilities
  • Programming skills in C/C++ and/or scripting language (e.g. Python).
